Transcript of Speech by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov at the CIS Member States’ International Economic Forum ‘New Initiatives in the Year of Russia’s Chairmanship in the CIS,’ Moscow, March 5, 2010

Dear colleagues and friends,

Igor Ivanovich Shuvalov has substantively and extensively delineated the challenges facing Russia’s chairmanship of the CIS, and our approach to strengthening and developing the economic component of the Commonwealth. For my part, I would like to illuminate this theme from a traditional foreign policy angle, with regard for our vision of the overall picture of a rapidly changing world and for our assessment of the long-term trends in world development.

In today’s world, the distinctions between internal and external means of safeguarding national interests and security are being erased. Therefore, diplomacy is substantially widening its functions, which now do not just include the promotion of economic development and the advancement of the tasks of energy and other security. The focus of foreign policy endeavors encloses the whole spectrum of national life issues, the key ones of which relate to development in the broadest sense of the word. It is development in accordance with the demands of the times that serves as the principal means of safeguarding the security of the state today.   Full story

Esteemed Colleagues,

Today we’re meeting for the first time with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President, Catherine Ashton.

We have just had a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in the Kremlin. During the course of the conversation special attention was paid to the need to increase the practical benefits of the strategic partnership, to define breakthrough and priority themes that will determine our agenda and, of course, we talked about how to do so that the first results of this work are already achieved toward the next summit of Russia and the EU, to be held in Rostov-on-Don from May 31 to June 1 this year.  Full story
 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s Statement to the Media at Joint Press Conference Following Talks with Kazakh State Secretary and Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev, Astana, February 22, 2010

I am satisfied with the trustful, comradely and productive dialogue that we today continued as part of the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation to Kazakhstan.

We discussed all questions arising out of the agreements reached by our Presidents, who hold meetings with startling intensity. Each time the meetings end with concrete actions that we need to put into practice. Today we discussed the whole range of bilateral relations and our cooperation on the international scene, given the fact that this year Russia is the chair of the CIS, and Kazakhstan as the collective candidate of the Commonwealth states heads the OSCE.  Full story

I would like to thank the Mexican side for their hospitality and to express satisfaction with the talks, which will advance our multifaceted cooperation, political dialogue and our trade and economic ties to a higher level. Russia and Mexico are actively cooperating in the international arena. We are equally looking at what the world order should be. It is about the formation of a polycentric world before our eyes, of the collective management of global processes, which is fully manifested in the creation of the Group of Twenty, in which Russia and Mexico are actively cooperating. We agreed to intensify and deepen this cooperation. With interest we discussed the situation in Latin America. We note the active role of Mexico in the integration processes in the region. Russia is interested in seeing Latin America strong, politically stable and democratically advanced.   Full story
